There is a reason why Ariel Concepcion has more than 10,000 followers on Instagram. His mobile photography captures the beauty of city life (specifically New York City) in a fresh light, and publications like Paste Magazine have noticed. We had an opportunity to ask him exactly what inspires his mobile photography and how others can bring out their inner photographers.

What serves as the inspiration for your mobile photography?

“My inspiration for mobile photography is capturing New York City. The culture, the architectural canvas, the motion of the city streets. There is always something new and old to capture every day in a city that is always changing. Mobile photography is perfect for capturing moments in this city.”

What are your favorite mobile photography accessories (lens, etc.)?

“Currently my favorite mobile photography accessory would have to be a mini cell phone tri-pod. It fits in my bag and I can always use it to capture long exposure shots. It can also be used for when I need that sharp shot. Shaky hands can make for blurry photos, especially in the cold weather.”

What advice do you have for new mobile photographers?

“The best advice is can give someone new to mobile photography is to always keep taking photos! Also never compare your photos with other photographers, instead get inspired by a shot you saw and love. Try to replicate it your own way, try to find ways to improve a photo you took and get out there and take it again.”

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of photography?

“I would say that the most difficult challenge aspect of photography is staying inspired. Sometimes you may feel like your pictures aren’t good enough, or you may feel like you have taken that same kind of photo too many times already. This is why I feel you should find some other photographers, see what kind of photos they are posting. You may find something you like and may want to attempt it, it can definitely help!”

Do you have any post-photography editing tips or advice?

“My advice for post-photography editing is to always look into bringing out some details in the shadows and making the colors pop. Give people things to look at in a photo, details and colors attract interest from your viewers. Try to develop a style that can carry over several photos.”

What has been the most difficult subject to shoot in the past?

“The most difficult subject for me has been the ones you can’t control, a.k.a., animals. Buildings stand still and people can be directed. Animals are all over the place, definitely the hardest subjects to try and take a photo of. However, they can be very fun at times!”

What do you define as your strength as a photographer? What does your audience resonate with in your work?

“I definitely think that my biggest strength is being able to take common photos and giving them a different look and feel. I think that’s why my audience resonates with my work, I try to always bring them something new. Especially living in an iconic city like New York, being able to show it in different perspectives is something that I love to do and share.”

Any other tips or advice you would like to share on mobile photography?

“Keep taking photos if it’s something you’re into and love to do! You will get better and better with each shot. The only person you should comparing your photos to is yourself. Find ways and ideas to make your last set of photos better, have fun with it and stay inspired!”
